5 Easy Ways to Save on Energy Costs this Winter

lightbulbEach Winter we Coloradans feel the woes of the cold in so many more ways than just the weather on our skin.  Feeling it in your energy bill is a constant reminder that Winter will be here for a while.  Don’t sit helpless and wait for the warmer weather to turn back around.  Completing these simple home maintenance tasks can save you hundreds, most for very little out of pocket expense.

Caulk and Seal Anywhere You May Find an Air Leak

Some places to look for that pesky cold air seeping through into your home are more obvious, like doors and windows.  But here are a few that might not come to mind so quickly.  Check for air leaks around:

-plumbing lines
-electrical wiring
-recessed lighting
-crawl spaces

Hire an HVAC Certified Contractor to Inspect Your Ducts and Airways

Any HVAC professional can assess the life left in your furnace, clean and inspect it to make sure it is functioning properly and efficiently.  At this time, they will also inspect your ducts and airways to ensure that nothing is blocked to prevent warm air from working harder to get out into the room and that nothing needs to be resealed.  This can be pricey upfront, but it will save not only your energy bills but could help to extend the life of your furnace or A/C unit.

Purchase a Programmable Thermostat

It’s not necessary to keep your home heated to the comfortable temperatures you desire while you’re away at work and school.  By purchasing a programmable thermostat you have the ability to set the heat to come back on before you get home, but you’re not heating an empty house.  We have seen programmable thermostats at cheap as $20 and ranging all the way up to $300+ for all the high tech seeking homeowners.

Change Your Light Bulbs

We recommend using an LED bulb for maximum energy efficiency.  These units have been pretty costly in the past but are coming down with costs considerably.  We have seen models less than $10 at the hardware store, and being thought to use 85% less energy the bulb will pay for itself within a few months.

Reduce the Temperature on Your Water Heater

Most water heaters are automatically set at 140 degrees from the factory.  By simply reducing this setting to 120 degrees you can cut the energy cost of hot water by up to 10%.  Take it a step even further by wrapping your pipes and water heater with insulation material to make sure that your water heater doesn’t have to work as hard to keep that water hot.
