Ideas to Stay Fit this Holiday Season

Winter is here!  Time for sweaters, hot chocolate, movie nights, and holiday dinners with friends and family.  Keeping your family happy and healthy over the whole year is super important, but it’s a little harder to get outside when the weather is below freezing.  Here’s a few helpful hints to keep your eye on the prize this holiday season:

Completely Change Up Your Fitness Routine
Changing up your fitness routine will force your body to adapt to the new stimuli, which in turn burns more calories than the activity would normally.  So…..  If you’re a swimmer, start lifting and if you’re a lifter start swimming.  We all love pie!

Recruit a Holiday Work Out Buddy
If you normally go to the gym alone, find someone to go with.  If you have a work out buddy, invite someone new to join the group.  This will help you feel more accountable when you’re thinking a lazy day is in the mix.  Plus, now you’ve got a great new friend to help you follow through on your New Year’s Resolution!

Enroll Yourself for a Spring Extravaganza
If you have a spring 5K, bike race, or really whatever you love awaiting you along with the warmer weather you will be more motivated to stay on track.  So enroll now, that way you have no excuses tomorrow!

Portion Control
People often take the obvious for granted, but portion control really goes a long way!

Keep a Journal of Your Goals
It’s human nature that the written word is somehow more binding than a verbal contract, whether that be with yourself or another.  Keep a journal of your goals over the holiday season and take things a day at a time.  We all have to start somewhere!

Study: Caffeine Helps You Recall More Details

A little caffeine may give your memory a jump-start, according to a new study published in the scientific journal Nature Neuroscience. Researchers found that giving people caffeine after they memorized a series of pictures significantly increased their ability to recall subtler details than people who had only received placebo pills.

However, don’t overdo it, researchers say. A 200-milligram dose of caffeine — about the equivalent of a large cup of coffee — was the only amount that helped people better recall the pictures. Any more caffeine than that actually could be a distraction from memory and make people more jittery and agitated.
