Solid new-home sales lift hopes for housing market

WASHINGTON—A surprisingly strong pace of new-home sales last month has boosted hopes that the spring buying season will be solid enough to lift the overall economy.
Sales of new homes rebounded in January to the fastest rate in more than five years. The strength in purchases followed a slowdown that had been linked to higher mortgage rates and severe winter weather.

Home availability in Denver bucks national trend

Denver was one of the relatively few large metropolitan areas in the nation where the availability of homes for sale in January declined year-over-year rather than increased, according to a Zillow report.

The report said inventory rose from January 2013 to January 2014 in 22 of the 35 largest metro areas covered by Zillow.

US home prices dip for second straight month

WASHINGTON—U.S. home prices fell for the second straight month in December as brutally cold weather, tight supply and higher costs slowed sales.
The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index declined 0.1 percent from November to December, matching the previous month's decline. The index is not adjusted for seasonal variations, so the dip partly reflects slower buying as winter weather set in.
